A fixed routine at opening and closing keeps the till balanced and the day running smoothly. Here's a simple checklist.

At opening

  1. Turn on the POS, card terminal and printers.
  2. Log in with your PIN and start the shift with the correct float. See "Log in and start your POS shift".
  3. Check the change in the drawer.
  4. Test a receipt and a small card payment.
  5. Check that out-of-stock items from yesterday are updated.

At closing

  1. Close any open tables and parked sales.
  2. Count the drawer and close the shift. See "Close your shift and count the drawer".
  3. Run the daily settlement (Z-report). See "Running a daily settlement (Z-report)".
  4. Remove cash for safe storage. See "Cash in and cash out on the POS".
  5. Turn off equipment per your routine.

Good to know: The same routine every day makes discrepancies easy to spot – if the till is off, you know where to look.

Tip: Post a short version of this list by the till for new staff.
