A fixed routine at opening and closing keeps the till balanced and the day running smoothly. Here's a simple checklist.
At opening
- Turn on the POS, card terminal and printers.
- Log in with your PIN and start the shift with the correct float. See "Log in and start your POS shift".
- Check the change in the drawer.
- Test a receipt and a small card payment.
- Check that out-of-stock items from yesterday are updated.
At closing
- Close any open tables and parked sales.
- Count the drawer and close the shift. See "Close your shift and count the drawer".
- Run the daily settlement (Z-report). See "Running a daily settlement (Z-report)".
- Remove cash for safe storage. See "Cash in and cash out on the POS".
- Turn off equipment per your routine.
Good to know: The same routine every day makes discrepancies easy to spot – if the till is off, you know where to look.
Tip: Post a short version of this list by the till for new staff.
