Choosing the right VAT (MVA) code
Understand the Norwegian MVA codes and pick the correct one for each product.
VATMVAtaxcompliance
Every product needs a VAT (MVA) code so the correct Norwegian tax is charged and reported. You set this in the VAT Code field on the product's Generally tab.
See the available codes
- Go to Products → Products.
- Click Show VAT Info at the top of the page.
- A reference panel opens listing each code, its rate and examples. Click Hide VAT Info to close it.
The codes
| Code | Rate | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| MVA25 | 25% | Standard rate — most goods, restaurant dine-in, alcohol, electronics, clothing |
| MVA15 | 15% | Food sold as goods — takeaway food, groceries |
| MVA12 | 12% | Passenger transport, accommodation and culture — taxi, bus, hotel, cinema |
| MVA0 | 0% | Zero-rated — exports, international transport, newspapers |
| UNNTAK | 0% | Exempt — health care, financial and education services |
Set it on a product
- Open the product and go to the Generally tab.
- In Pricing & Tax, choose the right value under VAT Code.
- Click Update Product.
Good to know: If the product has Food Service turned on, you do not pick a code manually — dine-in is taxed at 25% and takeaway at 15% automatically.
Tip: When unsure between MVA25 and MVA15, ask whether the item is eaten on the premises (25%) or sold to take away (15%).
